I'm 31 and I've never had a professional wax. Eyebrows, arms, legs, armpits... the bikini zone... nada.
Two reasons I've been scared: just the general though of waxing, duh, and what if I pick a salon that results in me having a horrible experience? No thanks, I'll just keep buying wax strips from the store and hope I know what I'm doing.
Then a few weeks ago, after an unfortunate boo boo when trying to get myself bikini ready, I realized I should just leave waxing to the pros. That's why they exist after all! Shortly after that, I received an invitation to check out the new Rockville location of waxing spa, Shobha.
Talk about perfect timing for me to give this wax thing a try!
But first, grab a friend. That's Bikini Wax 101, right?
I asked my BFF if she'd like to join, hoping I didn't have to experience all this alone and she'd want to try bikini waxing as well. We put the event on our calendars, excited for a girls date yet nervous/curious about how much it would hurt.
Once I arrived, I was greeted by the sweetest staff. As I was waiting to be called back, I shopped the shelves of natural beauty products, enjoyed some
Sugaring is a more gentle, all-natural hair removal that uses a mixture of sugar, lemon juice, water and glycerin. The sugaring method pulls less on hair, yet effectively removes hair from the root. It doesn't hurt as much as regular wax and you'll notice less redness and irritation.
Before the first drip of wax touched my skin, my technician Michelle asked me to taste the wax. Yep! Taste. The. Wax. After a skeptical 'seriously?!', I went for it. It was actually really sweet because of all the natural ingredients. (Then she told me there is a no double-dipping policy so that was reassuring.)
Fast forward through just a few painful moments, me holding my breath, lots of nervous sweat and questions, and I am completely ready to throw my wax strips away.
So, waxing or sugaring?
Sugaring all the way. I could definitely tell a difference between the two in the first "test" on my skin, and Michelle and I both agreed to stick with sugaring. It was noticeably less painful! Michelle even did some touch up by threading which didn't hurt much either.
This may sound crazy but I am still so happy with my entire experience at Shobha. Michelle was so helpful in answering my questions, sharing the entire process, giving advice on the easy upkeep and recommending products to use in between visits. I already can't wait to go back.
If you have never tried waxing yet, or are in search of a better place, I highly recommend Shobha. I promise I'm not turning into a beauty blogger, but I just had to share my experience. And plus, we all need to feel extra fabulous in a bikini!
#HairlessHappiness, for sure!
Shobha is located at 1800 Rockville Pike. If you're in the area, stop by and see Michelle... she rocks! There are also locations in NYC and DC and you can book appointments online.
I received a complimentary wax from Shobha, however all opinions are my own.
