Sometimes, a piece of clothing just forces a certain song to get stuck in your head each time you wear it. That's one of the things I love about this workout tank... I always have a flashback to singing the Blackstreet song word for word. (Hello MAJOR throwback to 1994!)

Now that I'm all grown up, I enjoy finding fun workout tank tops that take me back down memory lane. While fighting the urge to sing out loud in the gym and using the hashtag #nodiggity on all social media platforms. Which is totally acceptable......no doubt.

4 Cures for Sore Muscles

March 13, 2015

I've been bumping up my workouts these last few weeks and let me tell you - my body is feeling it. This week especially, I have been so sore from lots of heavy lifting and compound workouts that benefit the whole body.

Workouts (weightlifting, especially) can cause calcium build-up in your muscles that form into knots. If you don't keep these at bay, they'll only get worse. Don't get me wrong - being sore is a great feeling because I know I've pushed myself... but in order to prevent injuries, I've learned several ways to help sore muscles.

workout, fitness, bootcamp, Taylored Fitness, Mid Atlantic Photography, stretching,

Stretching - Whether you're just starting a workout routine, or working out 6 days a week like I do, it's important to make stretching a daily priority before and after your workout - no matter the intensity. It warms up your muscles and stretches them out so you're less likely to hurt yourself. Sometimes if I feel a little tight I'll stretch during my workout in between sets.

workout, fitness, sore muscles, foam roller, sore muscle cures, Gaiam foam roller

Foam Rolling - This quickly became my FAVORITE thing to do each workout and I was amazed at how much it helps keep my muscles calm. Ideally you want to use the foam roller before and after your workout. Gyms usually have several foam rollers you can use - but I got one for Christmas and I love having my own at home. You should foam roll for at least 30 minutes each time to make it effective. Your muscles will thank you, trust me!

Icyhot - I should buy stock in this stuff I use it so much. The hot/cold aspect helps to relieve muscle aches and knots. If you use the roller ball kind like I do - just be sure to rub it into your sore areas for a few minutes. (I actually do it twice before bed.) When I wake up my muscles feel so much better!

Epsom Salt Bath - Who doesn't love to take a bath? I save them for the weekends when I need to wind down after a long week and now I always add epsom salt. Epsom salt relaxes the nervous system, soothes back pain and relieves muscle strain and cramps. I will not judge you if you have a glass of wine, too. ;)

How do you fight sore muscles?

Well I never thought I'd be doing this kind of #outfitpost but I can't be back in the blogging game and not show what I wear! And what now takes up most of my weekly laundry pile? Active wear.

I mentioned in this post about Carrie Underwood's new fitness line, CALIA by Carrie, and let me tell you I've touched everything IRL and it's so. good. Not only are the designs amazing, but the quality is great and I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of workout wear. Everything from shorts, sports bras, capris, tank tops - even accessories including yoga mats but I just had to get these floral capris!

Have you shopped the CALIA by Carrie line? What do you think of the items?

How To Meal Prep

March 9, 2015

I used to think of meal prep as something families do. It's just me, why should I spend a day or 2 making food to have for the week? It seemed pretty silly - until I started to eat much healthier. I needed a way to better plan out meals since I was good at staring into my refrigerator, clueless as to what I should make for dinner. (I can't even remember when I started meal prep because it's been part of my weekend fun for months!)

Meal prep/planning doesn't have to be complicated - especially if you have a Crock Pot. I use mine all the time for many different meals. It's such a time saver! I'm breaking down what I do each weekend (usually just on Sundays) to make sure I have meals for the week.

I start the process by washing all fruit for the week (except the bananas of course). This week, it's strawberries, grapes, bananas and apples. What I buy usually depends on stock and quality.

Once I have all my fruit washed, I cut it if needed and divide it into storage containers. That way I can grab and go in the morning when I am deciding what fruit to have with my lunch or as a snack at work.

Next, I plug in the crock pot which I always have handy, to make chicken. Not a cook? No worries! All I do is throw chicken breasts and enough chicken broth to cover them. Cook on low for 8 hours, shred it with a fork (which isn't necessary because it just falls apart) and just like that you have tons of protein for the week as a side, in a sandwich or more.

meal prep, meal planning, weekend meal prep, strawberries, fruit, cleaning fruit, eating healthy, food, crock pot, chicken, crock pot chicken breasts, quinoa

Next up: QUINOA. Which is my favorite thing to eat, second to avocados but that's a whole different post. I did not know until recently there is flavored quinoa - but I'm a 'plain Jane' and still buy the... plain stuff. I make it taste yummy by adding tons of veggies and sauces. I've even added it to chili - so good!

While my protein is cooking away in the crock pot and my quinoa is cooling, it's time to make some sweet potatoes.

meal prep, meal planning, weekend meal prep, strawberries, fruit, cleaning fruit, eating healthy, food, crock pot, chicken, crock pot chicken breasts, quinoa, sweet potatoes

I found individually packed ones at Giant Eagle and they're perfect for me. In 10-12 minutes you have a perfectly baked sweet potato. (Pro tip: since you're not supposed to poke holes in them, they will whistle in the microwave. This is normal, yet still scary. You may think it'll blow up but I've been doing this for a while and it hasn't happened.... yet.) Also, all the condensation is a great way to keep your microwave clean. #yourewelcome

A few other notes:

-I usually devour these meals at lunch so for dinner, I cook a different protein (i.e. turkey or pork) and then make a whole buncha rice that I can also swap for quinoa or sweet potatoes.

-I also make veggies to add to the meals because those are important, too! My go-to: sauteed sweet peppers and onions, broccoli, peas and a medley of green beans/carrots/corn and peas. Look Mom, I like veggies now!

-I also add different sauces with each meal since sometimes quinoa + veggies and turkey burger could be a little bland. Lately it's been Sriracha because that sh!t goes on everything.

-I don't follow this same plan every week. I've made turkey meatballs, Italian meatballs (which I also made yesterday and threw in one day to eat), turkey chili and more. Be creative!

meal prep, meal planning, weekend meal prep, strawberries, fruit, cleaning fruit, eating healthy, food, crock pot, chicken, crock pot chicken breasts, quinoa, meals for the week

Now I have 5 yummy meals and lots more left over. What I love about meal planning is the "mix and match" aspect. The possibilities are endless! If you want to start small, choose a new meal or 2 to make when you have time. I'm always pinning recipes on Pinterest and make at least 1 new meal each week so I don't get bored. (Even if it's a new dessert ;)

Speaking of dessert, I made Taylor's Blondies yesterday and they are YUMMY! You'd never know they were made with a very unusual ingredient.....

Do you do any meal prep? What are your secrets?

Friday Favorites

March 6, 2015

Part of my new and improving blog are weekly posts. And, while I'm still figuring out some others, I want to incorporate a Friday Favorites post because, well, FriYAY. And throughout the week I come across a lot of articles and fun videos that would (help) make the work day go quicker. Unless you are lucky enough to stay home for yet another #snowday.

Let's get the first Friday Favorites in the books shall we??

1. Conference calls aren't fun, but this video is hilarious. And accurate.

2. Bloggers, this Weekly Blog Planner Worksheet is keeping me majorly organized. And it's a free download!

3. I am a summer baby so I hate being cold and outside in the snow, but for some crazy reason I kind of want to try #snowga.

4. Maybe I should just stay out of the snow and start the search for a new swim suit. Target is having a big sale on swimwear! I love this strappy suit in mint. #thinkwarmthoughts

5. Need to find a good weekend cocktail recipe? Ask Google.

Have a great weekend everyone!

CALIA by Carrie

March 4, 2015

One of the motivators for me to get in the gym, believe it or not, is clothing. (Am I alone in this??) I usually buy the majority of my active wear from Target, Old Navy and the Nike and Under Armour outlet stores... until now.

Since working out, I've been researching a lot of new places to find workout gear - and I was SO excited to read a few months ago that Carrie Underwood has designed her own fitness apparel line called CALIA by Carrie which launches tomorrow at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Calia by Carrie, active wear, fitness apparel, work out clothes

Carrie is a fitness queen so she really knows what goes into active wear. I have been checking the website and Instagram as well, and the pieces I see are amazing. Very simple colors and patterns that will go with anything. I'm usually drawn to bright/colorful workout clothes but I really love the blush pink pieces like the sports bra and top.

And YAY for floral workout pants! I think this line is perfect for any activity: whether you're in the gym lifting weights, taking a cardio class or doing yoga. Now excuse me while I go buy 1 of everything at Dick's after my workout. Hey, a girl's gotta stay motivated! #dangerous #treatyoself

What do you think of the line? How do you stay motivated to work out?

This is not a collaboration.

My Fitness Transformation So Far

March 3, 2015

"Consistency will get you there; persistence will keep you there." ~Unknown

My fitness journey, progress pictures, weight loss, before and after pictures
July 2014

Part of sharing my fitness journey is reminding myself of my own progress. So, hello, crappy quality progress pictures! (Sorry, working on better ones in a month or so.) You might have seen a picture on my Instagram a few months ago, so why not share it all with you on my blog as well?

My fitness journey, progress pictures, weight loss, before and after pictures
November 2014

The picture on the left from July was in Miami, literally the day Chris and I started working out. After 4 months of working out 6 days a week, I began to see so many changes in my body! My stomach is shrinking and arms and legs are getting toned. It's so exciting to see these changes in such a short period of time! Talk about huge motivation.

These pictures are proof that it doesn't take a year or more to see results. You set goals and you can get there in no time with research, hard work and dedication!

What motivates you?

A New Beginning

March 2, 2015

Wow it's been a while since I've blogged. Opening my Blogger page to 'New Post' and sitting in the quiet to write feels so foreign to me - but I hope that feeling won't last too long.

So, where have I been the past 5 months? Handling 2 jobs, working on my selfie game and, when I'm not designing marketing materials or building media lists, I'm in the gym. But, before I go any further, let's rewind a little bit....

It all started when I went to Miami last July for my 29th birthday. I have never traveled much, or done anything outside of my comfort zone. MIAMI is out of your comfort zone?! - you ask. In a way yes, because since I can remember my birthdays have been spent with family enjoying fireworks, beaches and cookouts. (Nothing wrong with all that at all btw!) And not to mention, it takes a lot of money to travel.

But then, I was talking to my boyfriend over lunch one day about what I wanted to do for my birthday. In what came as a surprise to myself I declared that I wanted to do something different... Something I have never experienced before. We pretty much decided that day we'd be going to Miami - and invite all our friends. Since that time, I have had a burning fire for experiencing new things and started to think about my health and fitness goals. (The thought of going to Miami and bikinis may have pushed me a little more than usual.) He and I decided we would start training together (him training me, really) and I've never looked back.

Miami, beaches

Here we are today, 8 months later and I have been working out 6 days a week consistently. I'm reaching, and surpassing, goals already which is a huge motivator for me.

Had you asked me when I started this fitness journey what I expected to get out of it, I never would've said being mentally stronger. Yes, in these months I've learned a lot of workouts and what's best for me... but I've also learned I am my biggest critic and (more importantly) I CAN DO ANYTHING. It may not come easy, and I may will struggle at first, but I will get there.

My confidence is also higher than it has ever been. I feel like I can take on anything, whether it's increasing my weight on deadlifts, a big project at work or life struggles. I know that I have the will power to handle it and do anything to the best of my ability.

yoga, nike, livestrong, side plank, tree pose

So, today marks a new beginning and an "enhanced" blog, if you will (even a new design coming soon!). You'll still see outfit photos, just not in the capacity as before. And, while my focus is still 'feeling good', I'll be adding much more content about working out, taking care of your body and eating well because that is what really makes me feel good! (Oh and of course, my favorite active wear!)

gym, workout, target, activewear

I have SO MUCH to share and I've been keeping a list of ideas. There is also a fun collaboration coming up that will help kick things off and I'm so excited to start this new journey! I thank you all bunches for reading and hope you'll keep coming back for fitness advice, lessons I've learned and ways to push yourself.

Are there any specific posts you want to see? Let me know in the comments!
