5 Truths

March 29, 2013

I'm switching gears slightly today to tell you a bit about myself - way beyond what I'm wearing. By now, I'm sure you've seen the "5 Truths" posts going around the blogosphere and since I was tagged by my lovely friends Ashlyn and Stesha, it's my turn to spill (some of) the beans! Here goes nothin'....

1. I come from a big (tight-knit) family. I have an older sister and 2 younger brothers (the youngest just turned 21) which made for a bit of a stressful time growing up for my parents. We fought a lot but now we've all outgrown it. We also like to say that there's really 5 children because my Dad is pretty much a big kid and I wouldn't have it any other way!

2. I am a daredevil. I love roller coasters - the higher and faster the better. We used to go on family trips to Cedar Point and I loved every minute of it. I'm also planning a skydiving trip this summer and want to get my motorcycle permit again (I had it in PA but it expired when I moved to Maryland) to one day buy my own motorcycle.

3. I may have OCD. I'm a neat freak and love to clean. I can't stand dirty dishes in the sink so I'm constantly washing them and I make to do lists for everything. When I go up and down stairs, I always count them and I love even numbers. (It's taking everything in me not to include a 6th truth)

4. I had major jaw surgery in high school to correct an underbite. After going through many different surgeries and teeth pullings while I had braces, the last of it all was re-corrective jaw surgery. The surgeon had to break my top and bottom jaw and line them up so I literally have screws holding everything together. I was wired shut for several weeks and wouldn't wish it on anyone. (My family jokes that I have a screw loose because apparently during the surgery, the doctor lost a screw and they never found it.) I also have a letter from my doctor explaining why I have screws in my jaw in case they set off a metal detector. (Extra fun fact: the specialist I went to is also the Pittsburgh Penguins surgeon.)

5. High school brings back a lot of bad memories for me. I went to a small school and was known as "the girl who never talks" (my, how things have changed). I was also made fun of a lot in class because of my "k" vein on the right side of my forehead. It still makes me tear up to think about those times and I am very self-conscious about it to this day. Most of the time I manage to push those memories aside but there are days where it still hurts.

Tagging Alissa, Jamie, Emily, Sam and Erin. Time to share your 5 Truths!

Lace

March 28, 2013

Top: ModCloth / Jeans: Old Navy / Jacket: H&M [similar] / Oxfords: Old Navy
Earrings: unknown [love these] / Bag: Steve Madden [love this one] / Lipstick: Nars "Niagra"
Nail Polish: OPI "Guy Meets Gal-veston"

Since it's not quite the time to wear a lace dress, I reached for my sleeveless lace top. I can't wait to finally wear it when the sun is out and I'm in shorts... but until then I paired it with my trusty faux leather jacket. I love the look of lace and (faux) leather. So sweet, but with an edge!

PS: Tried this trick for getting your nail polish to dry immediately - and it works! Good 'ol Pinterest.

Easter Style Guide

March 27, 2013

Growing up, my family and I always had big Easter celebrations and took family pictures with my brothers in their shirt and ties and my sister and I wearing the latest Easter dress styles (complete with a straw hat even, duh). It's one of my favorite memories and to this day I still get a new outfit. Easter is a special holiday as well as the beginning of warm weather (unless you're here in DC) so why not celebrate with a new outfit? I've put together some of my favorites below..

When I think of Easter and this time of year, bright colors and (of course) floral come to mind..which I may be wearing this year. I also love eyelet and jacquard for Easter or any springtime event. They're both versatile, lady-like fabrics that never go out of style. It's no coincidence that I picked all dresses either. Sometimes it's easier to grab a dress from your closet and bring a cardigan along if you get cold. Throw on heels and a good statement necklace and you're out the door!

Do you buy a new outfit each year for any holiday?

Purple Midi Skirt

March 26, 2013

Turtleneck: unknown [similar] / Skirt: J.Crew [love this one] / Jacket: H&M [similar] /
Heels: ZaraNecklace: Jewelmint [similar] / Bracelet: Eastern Market / Purse: Coach [love this one] /

I didn't know what to wear for Palm Sunday church service, and really just wanted to throw on pants and one of my faux fur vests to stay warm. But, in an attempt to get away from wearing all black or black & white, I decided to go with a bold purple midi-length skirt. I still had to go with a turtleneck and faux leather jacket since it is freezing but the pop of purple and flowy skirt is just what I needed to be reminded that spring is here!

Weekend Gingham

March 25, 2013

Gingham Shirt: J.Crew [similar] / Cardigan: Gap [love this one] / Jeans: Old Navy / Flats: Target
Bag: Forever 21 / Bracelet: Eastern Market / Necklace: Glam Grab [on major sale!] /

I've pretty much had it with chunky sweaters and winter. There I said it. (As the snow is still falling.) Since my sweaters are now put away it's cardigans and button ups for me - especially for a drinks/movie night to see Olympus Has Fallen (which was so good). I decided I'd go a little "preppy" with my gingham shirt, a bright red cardigan and come animal print for good measure.

P.S. You may notice some a lot of changes around here - Feeling Good is now Feeling Good Style AND an official dot com! (Plus an updated design.) Thank you all for the sweet comments... it means the world! I updated my social media as well - which can be found at the top right of my blog.

Spring Trend: Silver

March 22, 2013

I'm having so much fun with my spring trend posts that you're getting an extra one this week! Today's it's all about silver - in shoe form.

silver shoes, silver, heels, pumps, flats, forever 21, piperlime, shoemint

Flats: Left / Right
Wedges: Left / Right
Heels: Left / Right

While silver shoes really aren't that new of a concept, lately they've been getting a lot more attention - and for a good reason. From silver sandals, wedges and heels - all add a great pop of metallic to any outfit. It's a great way to add interest at your feet without going too crazy. Whether you're rocking a floral frock or one of your many maxi dresses - add some silver to your outfit and you'll feel instantly polished! In my opinion, silver is definitely the new nude.

What do you think of a silver shoe for summer?

Feeling Good Changes

March 21, 2013

My first outfit post.... yikes!

I've been blogging for just over 2.5 years now and it kind of happened by accident. I moved to Maryland with Matt and started a blog as I was job searching and exploring to keep my family updated on my new life. Needless to say, it was pretty random: a recipe I tried and loved, funny stories when people think I'm in high school and the occasional fashion post. As I continued to blog, I decided to focus on my love for fashion so I began to take outfit pictures and share what I was loving.

One thing that has stayed the same is my blog name - until now. After giving it a lot of thought (and reading Stacy London's The Truth About Style) I will soon be changing my blog name to Feeling Good Style. Stacy's book was so refreshing to me and it made me realize how different fashion and style are. I love fashion and following trends, but my style reflects me and I want that to be highlighted more on this blog - still in an affordable way. As my blog name and URL change, my social media handles will be adjusted as well.

Thank you all for your support up to this point - I hope you'll continue to read and feel good in what you wear! xo

Spring Has Sprung!

March 20, 2013

Trust me, I am bursting with excitement to say Happy Spring! I'm so happy this day is finally here, though I'd appreciate it if mother nature would catch up already. I've been counting down for weeks while freezing my buns off. To celebrate, my spring trends continue but this week it's all of my favorites wrapped in a pretty little bow with a bouquet of spring flowers.. like tulips!

While I'm planning a much more in-depth post about my spring must-haves, I couldn't help but share a bunch today. Of course, floral is at the top! Need I say more?? But I'm also craving eyelet in a fresh, bright coral color (and crisp white) and sandals that kick an outfit up several notches. I've also been itching to expand my chambray collection with a lighter version, and my shorts collection with some bright J.Crew chinos.

What are you craving for spring?

Birchblogger: Number 4 Hair Care Review

March 19, 2013

When it comes to hair care, I'm pretty much clueless. I rarely use the same products and buy whatever I have a coupon for. As I stand in Target, my selection process goes something like this:

Fruity shampoo and conditioner?! Done.
Coupon for $1 off? Done.
On sale AND a coupon for $1 off? I'll take 2.

So when I was picked by Birchbox to review the Number 4 High Performance Hair Care Hydrating Shampoo, Hydrating Conditioner and Blow Dry Lotion, I was really excited to try something totally new and safe for my hair. If you haven't heard of the line, it is a vegan, gluten and paraben-free formula designed to strengthen your hair whether it's color treated or not (like mine).

Set c/o Birchbox

I've been using the line almost a month now and definitely see positive changes in my hair. However, the only thing I don't like is the smell of the products (orchid and jasmine) but I don't hate it enough that I stopped using it.

The directions say 1 pump is enough to use for both the shampoo & conditioner, but it wasn't enough for my hair. (For those that don't know, I have very curly hair and I'm letting it grow... for now.) So I've been using 2 pumps and it works a lot better with my hair. I have noticed my hair is shinier and the ends look a lot healthier.

I also really see a difference with the Blow Dry Lotion. One pump is enough for my hair and it makes blow drying my hair much more manageable. Whether I'm going curly or straight, it doesn't weigh my hair down and (as long as I work it in enough) doesn't feel greasy. My hairspray usage is also down because a lot of my frizz has disappeared. And that's always a good thing!

With that said - I'm very happy with the Number 4 High Performance Hair Care line! Minus the smell - I love the products and see a big difference in my hair. I definitely recommend giving the products a try... and if you do - let me know how you like them!

Disclosure: Birchbox gifted me the set of Number 4 Hair Care to use and review. All opinions are my own.

Black Tulle Skirt

March 18, 2013

Top: Target / Skirt: LOFT [similar] / Tights: Alloy [similar] / Heels: Zara / Clutch: Payless [similar] / Earrings: Target [love these] / Lipstick: Covergirl Lip Perfection "Blush Twist"
Nail Polish: Revlon "Pink Lingerie" /

My spring/summer clothes are all washed and ready to be worn but since that's not happening anytime soon, I'm currently craving spring time colors. One color I can't get enough of already is mint so I decided to "winterize" it with a black tulle skirt and tights. The perfect way to inject some spring-like color while it's still chilly out!!

Tough Tulle

March 15, 2013

Shirt: Gap [similar] / Jacket: H&M [similar] / Skirt: PB&J Boutique / Oxfords: Old Navy /
Necklace: unknown [similar] / Nail Polish: Essie "Meet Me At Sunset" /

Normally, I get pretty annoyed with the wind as outfit photos are in progress. My hair gets tangled and stuck in my lipgloss and (with this weather) I'm freezing which doesn't help my already pale skin. However, when wearing a tulle skirt I embrace the wind and the more it flows I feel like a modern-day Cinderella. (Hi, new neighbors!) This time, I decided to "toughen up" my tulle skirt with a black tee and faux leather jacket. The perfect pairing!

Black Peplum Top

March 14, 2013

Peplum Top: Tinley Road via Piperlime / Jeans: Gap [similar] / Heels: Zara / Clutch: Gigee Marie
Jewelry: Fossil watch, ASOS spike bracelet/cuff/zig zag ring [similar], Eastern Market bracelet /
Lips: Mac "Red" / Nail Polish: Essie "Meet Me At Sunset" /

Hi my name is Alissa and I am the self-proclaimed queen of buying something and not wearing it for months. Like this faux leather black peplum top from Piperlime that I bought... November-ish? Don't ask my why I waited this long because I have no clue. I LOVE IT so much more not hanging in my closet. Even though I am clearly still addicted to black and white with a bold red lip, it's time to bring out the florals and brights for spring!

Here are the other ways I've worn black & white:

Spring Trend: Floral

March 13, 2013

The sun is shining more often each day and soon there will be flowers everywhere - but until then I'm rounding up my favorite floral patterns for this week's spring trend. I can't get enough of these items that are blooming with color. (You can see more looks in my Pinterest board dedicated to florals!)

Floral dresses are such an easy way to bring the trend into your wardrobe. They can be dressed up with heels and a bright clutch. But you can also add a chambray shirt underneath and flats for a more relaxed look. I love the idea of floral skirts or tops paired with stripes. (I may already have an Easter outfit of stripes and floral...) So many possibilities!
