Nautical

May 30, 2012

Going to the Bay always puts me in a Nautical mood!! Since it was a sun-filled weekend, nothing says laid-back like shorts, a tank and wedges. I just love the combo!

I built this outfit around the purse - a huge bargain when I went shopping with my Mom recently. It was a must have and literally made me stop and stare.. then buy. A new addition to my long list of obsessions: anchor jewelry.... ok anything with anchors on it. I will definitely be adding the necklace to my summer staples. Ahoy, matey!

Insta[gram]: Memorial Day Weekend

May 29, 2012

Our weekend digs!

One of the many great views

Even the dogs were tired from a long day in the sun

Perfect for chatting, keeping the bugs away...

.... and late night s'mores!

Casual outfit for dinner

I look really funny.. and tall

Happy Memorial Day from the boat workin' on my tan
In a first for me: my actual camera wasn't attached at my hip.. instead I snapped pictures in Instagram when I had my phone nearby (which wasn't often). It felt good to unplug from technology for (most of) the weekend. I was still tweeting every so often!

We had such a fun time!! Days ran together and consisted of quick meals to make more hours for crabbing, boating, swimming and soaking up the sun. The crabs weren't up to our part of the Bay yet, so we set our pots way out and caught a grand total of 2! Not exactly enough to cook for 10 people, but it was a blast.

I usually get burnt to a crisp at the Bay but I'm happy to report this time I left with color, some red areas where the sunscreen didn't work (or I'd like to think that) and an abundance of freckles. Bring on my summer tan!! I hope you all had a fantastic Memorial Day weekend as well!

Oh and P.S. - I over packed. Again. But I say it's better to have so many options just in case ;)

Memorial Day Weekend: Bay Essentials

May 25, 2012

Bay Essentials

Bay Essentials by alissakelly featuring stella mccartney sunglasses

Today, Matt and I are off to enjoy a long Memorial Day weekend at a friend's house on the Chesapeake Bay! For the next 4 days I will be falling under the category of "Beach Bum" -- only a cute one.

Even after making a list, I still find myself over-thinking what to bring. Packing is tough for me (the over-packer) so I have compiled my affordable bay/beach essentials for the summer.

Believe it or not, there are ways to be a "cute" beach bum. One way: bold prints & colors - whether on swim suits, towels or bags. (I also bring my black swim suit.. perfect to mix & match with other tops and bottoms.) Also, I tend to go crazy on jewelry so I'm working on cutting back. Since colors & prints are abundant, all you need are a few simple pieces that will work day to night.

Of course, this isn't all I'm taking along. We'll be going out to dinner a few nights, so I plan on throwing on a dress, wedges and some jewelry. It doesn't get any easier! Hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend!!

CapFABB: May Meetup

May 24, 2012

This month's CapFABB event at Upstairs on 7th was so fun! (Minus the huge rain storm on my way there.) I met so many other great women in person, finally.. and was loving the fact that I wasn't the only one rocking my rain boots!

Stripes & an arm party for the rainy weather

How fun are these cases?

Gorgeous jewelry

The Chinese auction

The night continued at Casa Nonna with Meaghan, Natalie & Risotto balls.. so fun!!
I chatted with the owner, Ricki, and she was so sweet and funny! She also donates money each month to organizations benefiting DC area women and children... such a great cause. You should definitely check out her store. Thanks so much for having all of us!

Up next on my agenda: Blogger Blitz DC. Can't wait to make a day of it with my favorite friends -- and make new ones!

Happy Thursday :)

The Shops at Target

May 21, 2012

I've been to Target bright and early for the debut of the Missoni & Jason Wu collections, and The Shops were next on my radar (especially after seeing the commercials).  I give the overall experience an A.... and not just because I didn't have to wake up with the roosters this time.

As some employees were inevitably wondering why I was snapping pictures, I figured I just had to share some of my finds with you.

How cute is this Flamingo print dress?!
The experience was great for a few reasons. Probably the first one being: the clothing. Leduh. Racks are filled with an array of pieces: cardigans, dresses, shorts, blazers, tops.. you name it. And the prints? To. die. for. The boldest of colors and patterns but I loved every single one.

I checked prices for those more frugal gals (like moi) and there is definitely a range, which is good. After perusing the racks I ended up purchasing an item... that will be on the blog soon! ;)

Great patterned & eyelet dresses

Color-blocking is another obsession of mine
I didn't even look at the shoes or accessories. Yet. So, in a nutshell... I'm going back!!

Have you checked out The Shops at your Target yet? How was your experience? Let me know in the comments below!

Silver

May 19, 2012

Today, I'm sharing what I wore to the Madewell Style Tour event this week.

I pulled this outfit together and suddenly decided: I'm wearing silver jewelry. The last time I wore silver jewelry? Can't remember. In this case, silver seemed to pop with the shimmery navy skirt and the ruffle top in a way that gold wouldn't. Plus, nothing wrong with switching up the jewelry party every so often.

And the clutch! The perfect amount of bam.. I love it! This outfit is another classic example of re-working clothing in my closet - something I'm challenging myself to do!

Madewell Styling Event

May 18, 2012

My partner in crime fashion, Meaghan of District Sparkle, was so kind to invite me to the Madewell Style Tour in Tyson's Corner last night. We had so much fun shopping, trying on clothes, chatting, laughing and did I mention shopping? Keep scrollin' to see our night in a nutshell!!

I want polka dot windows!

Don't mind if I do!

Cutest little treats!

A Pinterest idea I'm making ASAP.

Coolest thing ever!

Meaghan's pretty braid!

Yes, it is true love.. I want you all.

Some of Sydney's Favorites...

I had the pleasure of meeting & chatting with Sydney Poulton of The Daybook!
Such a sweetie!
It was such a fun event to meet others, shop a little a lot and laugh. I can't think of a better way to spend a Thursday night!

Flower Power

May 17, 2012

Perhaps you've heard there's a new trend blooming: floral. I saw this shirt online but wasn't sure if I should take the plunge. That is, until I started having dreams about the floral fabric and flowers in general. Read: it was meant to be.

I knew right away I'd pair it with my white skinnies so the shirt is the focal point. To pick up some of the blue in the shirt, I added my blue heels. (And how pretty are the flowers behind me in the last photo!?)

Have you purchased any floral items yet?

Fashion Inspiration: RB

May 16, 2012

I can't get enough of Rachel Bilson from the CW show Hart of Dixie. After this week's season finale, it made me think about how she is such a great role model in the fashion and entrepreneurial worlds. She is easily my number 1 fashion inspiration.

If you're not familiar with the show, Bilson plays Zoe, a doctor from NYC who is adjusting to life in a very small town and struggling to fit in-- fabulous wardrobe and all.

Outside of the show, Rachel (we're on a first name basis) is such a beautiful soul. I can just tell. She sticks to her values and doesn't dress in a way that makes her uncomfortable or feel like a different person. She doesn't like really short clothing (like me) yet still maintains a flawless style. "I like to be comfortable, and I don't like to be cold, and I don't wear anything I'm not in the mood for." (Lucky Magazine, April 2012) She loves pajamas and has a shoe line (ShoeMint)... a girl after my own heart. I know we would be BFFs.

I am in love with her wardrobe -in real life & on the show- so after hours of stalking her all over the internet, I've compiled a few of my favorite looks from Hart of Dixie. (HOD costume designer: call me!) Enjoy while I search for look-alike pieces and grow my hair out.

Images taken from here.

I am so excited Zoe, along with her blazers, skinny pants, stilettos and prints will be back for a second season!!!

Who is your fashion inspiration?

Ruffles

May 14, 2012

This dress makes me wish there was a H&M closer to me (or at least an online shop)! It's from last season and was among the huge pile of clothes I tried on that day... and not the only item I purchased. What I noticed immediately: (of course) the print.

After trying it on I had to have it. For a more work appropriate look, I paired it with minimal accessories and my nude pumps. It even works with a cardigan. Next time I wear it, though, I think I’ll add in a splash of bright colors. And maybe get a spray tan.
