Closet Inventory

Yes, I organize my closet in the colors of the rainbow!

If you go shopping haphazardly and end up with 5 pairs of black pants.. this FM post is for you!

It's imperative you take an "inventory" of everything you have. Pants, tops, dresses, even shoes and jewelry. No need to gravitate toward those black heels when you have 4 pair (I'm still working on that myself). If inventory seems weird to you -- just be glad you aren't taking inventory of a WHOLE store. Been there, done that many times!! Anyways, I hung out in my closet for a while to take inventory and actually had fun. (weird?)

Here's how to do it:

1. Separate your clothes, shoes and jewelry. You could even separate further ( i.e. dress pants, dresses, short sleeve tops, etc.)
2. Write down what you have. Especially if you have a lot of 1 item and really don't need to buy anymore!
3. When shopping, keep the list with you (or in your head). That way, you can buy items you don't have and think about combining your new buys with what's already in your closet. Hellooooo new outfits! :)

This is a great way to be organized and be more thorough when you're shopping. You can search for those great heels or that dress you know isn't similar to what you already have! I'm even putting together a 'fashion book' of sorts: clothing I already have, and my dream pieces I want to watch out for.

  1. How can I start creaing a great business casual work look when all i have to start with are jeans, nice gray pants, a few good shirts, and three dresses?

    Thanks for checking out my blog and asking a question!
    Your wardrobe so far sound great for business casual but there are some things I need to know: Are your jeans a dark wash? Do your shirts have collars and are your dresses wrap dresses?

    For different looks, you can pair jeans with collared shirts and minimal jewelry (such as pearls and a watch). You don't want to be too crazily dressed for work. Another outfit you could easily put together would be a dress with a cardigan over it and a skinny belt. Also, I would think about adding "staples" to your wardrobe, i.e. blazers in neutral colors that you can wear with anything! Pair with dark jeans and a shirt for a put-together work look or over a dress. I've been adding staples like that over time.. only spend what you can and build over time. Just be sure they are structured pieces.
