Tomorrow's A Big Day

March 29, 2011

I am very excited about Wednesday.... a lot of firsts: my first day full-time, first time taking the Metro to work, first time I get to go to bed late and "sleep in" past 3am.  It's a three-day week for me, and that's OK!  I start training tomorrow at 10:30am.  I don't know what I'm more excited about: not driving or starting at 10:30a.  This all will last just three days, but I'm going to soak it in for that time and enjoy it before I start my first full week (next Monday) writing for the morning show (and having a verrry early start to my workday).
I'm so ready to get started!  For once I'm not worried about this because I've been working here since November.  I know everyone, the way things are done, and I've been writing on the weekends so I'm good to go.  What a relief!  I can't imagine I'll have much to train on, but you never know.  I will just walk in there with the mindset that I'm a sponge: ready to absorb as much information as possible.  It's the beginning of a new chapter in my life and I can't wait!!  My quarters are packed, outfit picked out....I'll be sure to let you know how it goes :)

My Favorite Artist

March 28, 2011

Day #13: A picture of your favorite band or artist.

I <3 John Mayer.  I can remember way back when I was listening to his music, and I've grown to love this man and his music even more!  I have burned CD's of all his albums, and I went out to buy his newest one, Battle Studies, the day it came out.  His song lyrics are so amazing - and every time I listen to them I realize something new in his words.
Of course, his voice is to die for: so soothing and amazing I could just sit and let him serenade me for hours.  John Mayer was also my first real concert.  I got Matt and I tickets to his Battle Studies tour in DC for his birthday.  The concert was so fantastic!  On our drive there, Matt and I were trying to figure out what song he'd open up with.  After many guesses- I don't think either one of us got it right!  lol  He opened with Heartbreak Warfare, with his guitar strumming as the curtains opened.  I will never forget that!
As if his voice was enough to make me melt, his guitar playing abilities are phenomenal.  He can play on the floor, behind his back, slow, then his fingers just go crazy fast.  It is so cool to watch.  Though at times in the public eye, his comments really ticked people off (including me) but you gotta admit he's a great artist.  I leave you with the opening song of his concert, Heartbreak Warfare.  Imagine being in this crowd.. I get chills every time I think back to this!!

All This... And I Scrapbook, Too

March 22, 2011

Day #12: A picture of something you love.

My scrap-booking center!
I could create a very long list of what I love: (color, high heels, summer, the beach)... but there is one thing I want to put in this post I can't get enough of:

S C R A P B O O K I N G :)
I got into it years ago when I was really young because my Aunt used to sell Creative Memories, a company that has all things scrapbooking.  My mom, sister and I would go to parties and classes with a women at our church.  We bought albums, stickers, paper and other supplies and my love of scrapbooking grew from there.
I have a scrapbook I did when I was young and it's so funny to go through and look at the pictures/events and my horrible spelling.  (Memmories??!  Really?)
With high school graduation, college and college graduation happening I got away from doing it.  But during those years in my life, I still took so many pictures (I love taking pictures, perfect for a scrapbooker) which I never got developed since the digital camera.  Until recently, my pictures have just sat on my computer.  But since moving, getting an album for Christmas, and having a friend here that shares my hobby, I've jumped right back in.
I felt so overwhelmed when I looked at all my pictures that needed developed, but discovered Snapfish -- a website that makes it incredibly easy (and cheap) to get lots of pictures at one time.  I usually wait until there is a special then I order a bunch of pictures (which is often, surprisingly).  I've organized my picture box, have a list of events to put in my scrapbook and doing a little at a time.  Don't get overwhelmed!  I definitely don't feel that way anymore.
I'm currently working on my scrapbook of Matt and I: our 'story' and all the fun things we've done together... that I can keep adding to.  Scrap-booking is also fun because as you create each page, you also find yourself reminiscing about the people and events in the pictures.  It's my biggest hobby and one of my favorite ways to relieve stress.  (Who wouldn't want to get their pictures organized in a fun way to keep forever?!!)

A Day Dahn Tahn N'At

March 21, 2011

Finally, Home sweet home (after 3 months)!  Matt has never been to Pittsburgh before, so Saturday my parents, Matt, me and my brother headed out early to the city.  We started by having breakfast at DeLuca's, a famous diner in the Steel City.  When we got there, the line was out the door but luckily we didn't have to wait very long.  I had french toast which was very good.  It was really neat for me eating there for the first time, and seeing all the history in the building.  Places like that are fascinating!
After breakfast, we spent awhile in the Strip District: walking around, shopping at Penn Mac, Whorley's and more.  Between all of us, we got fresh bread, pasta and all kinds of goodies.  I enjoy going there and getting up early is worth it.
Then we went to Mount Washington to take in the view of the bustling city below and it takes my breath away every time.  It really is such a beautiful city and we got to see Heinz Field, PNC Park and the Point.  (Don't worry I took lots of pictures)  And one thing I wasn't aware Pittsburgh had -- a National Aviary.  We headed there and it was awesome!  Birds roam and fly free around the Aviary: pecking at shoes, flying past your head at high speeds, dive bombing, eating... it was so neat!  And what's really amazing: none of us got pooped on!  My favorite part: penguins.  They were really friendly and we even got to see them swim around.  Adorable!!
Then, we drove to Pitt and visited the Cathedral of Learning.  We missed the whole guided tour of rooms, but wandered around by ourselves for a few hours checking out any classrooms we could find that were unlocked.  Each room is decorated like the different parts of the world: Italian, American, Welsh, Chinese and way more than that!
What a great day...... and weekend.  I've posted some pictures below :)

Happy St. Patrick's Day, Lads & Lassies!!  In celebration of the day, and my Irish heritage (the percentage is debatable) here is the Irish Blessing :)

Don't Ever Wear Crocs

Day #11: A picture of something you hate.

OK- do I need to write anything about this??!  While I enjoy the fun colors in this picture I HATE Crocs.
Why?  They are the ugliest "shoes" ever made.  Feet are not the most attractive things to begin with, so why would you want to slip them into these things?  It makes you look like you have foot fungus, and were prescribed special "shoes" to air out the smell seeping from the pores.  (too graphic?)
Crocs also make your feet look HUGE.  And who wants that?!  Oh goodness just thinking of them and looking at this picture is enough to make me gag.  Why not wear a fabulous sneaker, flip flop with bling, a wedge, espadrille - - the possibilities are endless, people!  Thankfully, I don't see many people wearing these, so I hope they are (quickly) going out of style.  Give me some heels any day!!

We're Crazy Together!

March 16, 2011

Day #10: A picture of you and the person you do the most crazy things with.

This is the one person I do the most crazy things with.  I mean craazy things!!!  OK- I'm being a bit sarcastic because the things we do together aren't 'crazy'.. they're just FUN!  We've gone to a John Mayer concert, the beach, cabin, visited friends with one another and much more.  Then there are the days ( every week) when we just relax in front of the TV with Netflix movies.  We looove going out and taking walks, being animals at the National Zoo, and artsy-fartsy at DC museums as well.  We've done a lot and there's no end in sight :)  Some of which I've blogged about previously -- and crazy fun to come that I'm sure I'll blog (or Tweet) about.  It's about to get real crazy this weekend when we go HOME to my family!  Lookout New Wilmington/Pittsburgh and family!!! :-D  Can't wait to see you all! xoxo

My Rocks

Day #9: A picture of the person who has gotten you through the most.

My Grandma, Mom & Nunnie <3

In true Alissa fashion, and not sticking to the exact description, I chose three lovely ladies who have gotten me through a lot in life.
My Grandma.  She is a strong woman and will leave you practically peeing your pants because you're laughing so hard at the things she says.  Growing up, Sundays after church were always spent at her and my Grandpa's house eating a good Italian meal and spending time with each other.  I will cherish those for the rest of my life.  I look at her life and the way she lives it: patience, love, gratefulness, Godliness and so much more.  Though I might not have asked her advice on life's many issues, actions speak louder than words and her actions speak volumes.
My Mom.  She is definitely my Grandma's daughter :)  She possesses the same fabulous qualities that I look up to and admire.  My mom has had to deal with a lot of my shenanigans (and not just throwing rocks or metal airplanes at my brother growing up) yet she is patient, kind and always there to help.  I hope one day to be the same kind of mother and person to my children.
My Nunnie.  God bless her for raising my Dad!  (Just kidding- I wouldn't trade my father for any other guy, he's so great)  She is also a woman who has helped me through a lot though she may not know it.  In her hugs, kind words, conversations and wisdom I really want to emulate all of the qualities of her and the other two women.  I see on a regular basis how to live life, enjoy each day and never take anything for granted.
And I definitely don't take these three women for granted.  They are funny, loving and caring -- and have helped me through a lot in life!  Love you all, and can't wait to see them soon!!! :)

Color Makes Me Happy

March 10, 2011

Rain, rain and more rain!  That's been the weather since late last night, and it's still raining as I write this.  I saw this article and had to put it in my blog to share: the most colorful places to visit around the world.  So neat to see -- and a pick-me-up on a rainy day.  I've picked three of my absolute favorites, and would LOVE to one day visit these places.  Doesn't this make you so happy?!  I really want to paint our apartment building now....

Cape Town, South Africa

Notting Hill, London

Venice, Italy

Just Rubbing For Good Luck

March 9, 2011

Day #8: A picture that makes me laugh.

This picture does a really good job of cracking me up when I see it.  Let me give you the story: it was the Summer of 2007, and my parents and sister came to NYC for my last day at Fox News Channel.  They came to the Fox & Friends greenroom for the show with me, went into the studio while I did the weather live, then afterward we did some sightseeing.
Ever since seeing Hitch I have wanted to visit this stock market bull -- and we found it!  I was so excited and in awe that part of the movie was filmed right there (I'm a dork, I know).  SO many people surrounded the statue: taking pictures, touching it even climbing on it.  And I just happened to know that one is supposed to rub it's (ahem) balls for good luck.  It might have been my idea, but as you can see my sister didn't go for it.  My mom and I on the other hand.... just went with it!  LOL  I was cracking up the whole time and as people around us saw how we were posing - they laughed, too.  It was such a fun time with my family.  Why not be crazy and have a good laugh in the Big Apple?!  :)  A great end to the best summer of my life.  I must get this picture framed..... (and lightened).

Day #7: A picture of your most treasured item.

OK-so I have no clue what to put on this day.  No your computer is fine, I didn't upload a picture because I honestly can't think of a treasured item in my possession.  I have a lot of things important to me: family, friends and my cellphone so I can talk to them.  (Sounds weird I know, but it's my lifeline)  So this blog post will be about my most treasured people (can I do that?!) in my life.

These are just a handful of my amazing family members who make me laugh until it hurts, try to intimidate my boyfriends, welcome strangers to family functions, make me feel blessed and so much more.  I don't know what I'd do without them, but I won't have to find out!  Love you all!  (And those not pictured)
PS~ hopefully my next blog post will be a little better than this one ;) xoxo
