Dancin' Fool

Day 16: A picture of someone who inspires you.

Hines Ward & Kym.. Dancing With The Stars Champ!

Hines Ward inspires me... because who knew he'd be good at dancing?  I kind of had an inkling since he is a phenomenal football player, and I sure hoped he would take that mirror ball!  I just think it's great he won... showing every one of us we can do whatever we set our minds to.  There is so much I want to do in life, and it can be done.  Hines even said himself he didn't think he'd be on DWTS much less win the whole thing.  You just never know where life can take you!  :)  Life is a highway.....

It's Tuesday already.. but I must blog about my weekend.  It was pretty uneventful.  We went from having a bazillion plans to zero, so Saturday night we did our own fondue!  Matt's mom got him a fondue pot for his birthday so we decided to finally use it.  And it was phenomenal!
We kept it really simple by just putting salt and pepper on the meat (which we got a really good deal on at the grocery store.)  For the liquid, we used cooking wine and chicken broth which added a lot of flavor.  Yum!
I couldn't get my other pictures to upload (grr) but here is a picture of our dessert fondue: chocolate with strawberries and bananas to dip!

I recommend a fondue night... it's a DO! ;)

Ta ta for now!

Week End

May 16, 2011

So Matt and I actually had a nice relaxing weekend and it was just what I needed...and everyone needs once in a while.
Friday night we were supposed to go kayaking but it was canceled due to weather so instead we went on an impromptu date night!  It all started with finding a Salvation Army to give a lot of clothes away to and our GPS took us to the SA Business Office.. which was closed and no donation bins to be found. Weekend: 1 Matt & Alissa: 0.
We also went out to eat at Outback (yum!) because we had a gift card we forgot about!  Weekend: 1 Matt & Alissa: 1.  Then, we also had a Target gift card to use so we went there and got some essentials!  I do believe that brings our score to Weekend: 1 Matt & Alissa: 2

Saturday, after sleeping in, Matt and I gave the apartment a MUCH needed cleaning from top to bottom.  A very clean apartment = a VERY happy Alissa.  Then we watched Netflix movies, and were pretty much bumps on a log.

Oh yeah and we made our own pizza!!!  I was feeling a bit tired of pasta (!), and I have a recipe for pizza dough so I said let's make it!
It ended up being huge (we could only eat 2 pieces each which is rare) and the great thing: we used leftover ingredients in our refrigerator!  The cheese was a shredded mix of Asiago and other yummy Italian cheeses then we had a small block of.. more Asiago which we grated up.  And we had a little bag of real bacon bits left so we threw those on top, too.  AH-MAZING.  Fattening, perhaps, but still amazing.  It sure was fun to make!

We also found a yummy fruity drink online to make!  Very simple: just pineapple juice, coconut rum topped off with a little bit of sprite.  And we had pineapple chunks that I cut and garnished on the rim of the glass! :)  Cute, huh?
It's the little things in life -- and weekends like these -- that make me happy and relaxed from a stressful work week.  I love to get out and do fun things, but hey -- vegging out for a weekend is just as fun!!!
How was your weekend?!

P.S.  I think it's now: Weekend: 1 Matt & Alissa 5783 ;)

Taking the Plunge

May 11, 2011

Day 15: A picture of something you want to do before you die.

OH lawdie I have a biiig list with this title.. but okay I'll narrow it down to the number one thing on my list.

SKYDIVE!!!!  (Mom, you had to know this was coming and no, I didn't forget:)  I have wanted to do this since I can remember however, my Dad decided to take the plunge before I was legally old enough to do so.
No biggie!  I'm still going.. with or without my Dad.  I am already researching prices, and trying to decide when I should go.  I'm going to go in Grove City near my home where my Dad went because it's a good place and I can make a home trip out of it!
I want to feel the rush of jumping out of a plane, the wind in my face, not knowing whether I'm screaming because I can't hear past the air.  Just thinking about it makes me ridiculously excited.  This is the summer.  I will go home for a family-fun-skydiving extravaganza.  Family be ready :)  Now, who wants to go with me?!!

It's Friday.. Friday...

April Fools!!  It's only Wednesday (aww shucks) but I have something fun to share.  Who doesn't looove "Glee?"  I wish I could be awake to watch the show each week, but I've resorted to Hulu, youtube and what I see on the news to catch up.
So this week's episode, the 'Gleeks' do their version of "Friday" by Rebecca Black, a teenybopper who became a YouTube hit with her song.  I found the Glee version last night at work, and wanted to play it on loop while I worked -- but figured my coworkers might not like that.  (It'd probably hurt more since it's not Friday, too!)  It's such a catchy tune and I think the Glee version is WAY better!!  Check out Rebecca's version in the link above.  What do you think??

Pose Like A Pro

May 8, 2011

It's very early, and I'm awake -- so I can fall asleep at 2/3PM for work tonight... and while perusing Twitter I came across a cool article slide show from Instyle on how to work the camera and look fabulous in pictures.  Who doesn't want that?  I know I love taking pictures.. so I figure I'd share the tips.

1. Fake a tummy tuck: Twist your torso, turning one shoulder toward the camera and the other away from it.  It makes you look very slender.

2. Pucker up: Avoid nude lip colors.. they can make you look like a corpse once the flash hits and brights can come across harsh.  Instead, a berry lip color with a hint of sheen flatters everyone.

3. Don't drink and pose: try to take pictures early -- before that 3rd or 5th glass of wine.  You're more in control.  No matter how bright the flash is, your eyes will look droopy after drinks.

4. Go natural: Hair with movement in it comes across sexier on film, so go easy on the styling products.

5. Let the camera do the work: a good one doesn't have to be complicated.

6. Stick your neck out: push your face forward ever so slightly.. it makes your face look thinner and avoids a "double chin"

7. Seek out the sunset: dusk is the best time of day for outdoor pictures.  The sun casts less shadow downward, so you don't end up with bags under your eyes.  Instead, it lights up the area under your eyes making you look younger.

8. Don't sweat it: too much shine can be distracting.  Use a matte finishing product and run it on the side of your nose, forehead and chin.  It neutralizes shine instantly.

9. Put money where your mouth is: when taking pictures say "money" (not cheese!).  The strong 'e' sound makes the corners of your  mouth go up and the crinkles around your eyes make it look like a genuine smile.

10. Trademark your own "Blue Steel": is your right side more flattering?  Does a subtle smile look sexier?  Pull out all your favorite pictures of yourself and see what you like.  You'll probably find a look that's consistent and once you know how you like yourself to look, it's much easier to replicate it.

Now go work it :) xoxo

A Day I'll Never Forget

May 2, 2011

I just have to write some of this down.  The events of a day that we all will remember forever: the death of Osama Bin Laden on May 1, 2011.  I'll be brief and not too graphic -- but I feel as though I need to get some out.
I had a really restless sleep last night, I kept waking up, heard the neighbor's annoying dog and dreading the work week ahead.  Then, shortly before my alarm was scheduled to go off, Matt woke me up and said there was breaking news I needed to see.  I walk out to the living room and see a Fox News alert that Bin Laden has been killed.
I cannot believe it.  I certainly wasn't rejoicing -- because to me death isn't something positive (especially in this case) but I really feel that Osama had gotten his due.  This life is nothing, compared to the next life he has to endure.  I kept thinking about what will happen when Bin Laden's backers find out the events: will they retaliate and attack the US?  Will they target D.C.?  I hope and pray that doesn't happen... but let's be honest it's a possibility.
It was nights like last night that I love my job: the hustle and bustle of work and breaking news.  I was glued to the TV once I arrived to the station to keep ahead of the events.  It was so hard to look away and write other stories!
I just want to express my sincere thanks to the troops fighting, and dying, that we may have the freedom we take for granted each day.  Without them, we'd have nothing.  Their families as well for the daily battle of their son, husband, brother, sister -- on the front lines.. and the uncertainty of their coming home.  We all need to pray and keep them in our thoughts daily.
My heart also goes out to the family members of those killed on 9/11.  I cannot fathom going through that -- but I wish you all peace.  Know that God always has his loving arms around you.

Sunday, May 1st, 2011 will stay in our minds forever.  Just like 9/11, we'll remember when we found out, how we found out, how we felt in those moments.  May God Bless America.
